In order to become a dental hygienist, candidates must complete a dental hygiene program.  Colleges and universities offer dental hygiene programs at the certificate, associate, bachelor, and master degree levels.  Dental students complete courses in science, anatomy, radiography, and clinical dental hygiene, among others.

State licensing is a requirement and must be obtained before beginning to practice.  The American Dental Association’s Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations provides a certification exam that is accepted nationwide.  Most states require a passing score on the exam before licensure will be granted.  Specific licensing information can be found at your state dental licensing board or by using the ADHA's members only listing of licensing authorities.
